Pat Malotte

Pat completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Rochester Institute of Technology majoring in graphic design. The design curriculum was valuable in studying color, typography, composition, photography, perspective and learning to use power tools!

She has always “made stuff”–sewing clothes, quilting, knitting, cross stitch but her introduction to finer art was an exploration into making stained glass pieces, which continued for many years and included taking classes and workshops in that area. Later an interest in mosaics developed after seeing Dotti Stone’s work at Bower Center and taking a class from her.

Pat has been creating mosaics for several years and enjoys the meditative aspect of cutting and placing tile and has exhibited in several local galleries

Artist Statement:

I like the tactile nature of working with tile as I did with fabric, yarn and glass.  To me it seems a more direct expression than reached through a paintbrush or pencil. I sometimes have a vague idea of what I want something to look like but more often let the material dictate the result. I am more inspired by color, texture, and sparkle than depicting a realistic scene and I like being surprised at the outcome.  Therefore, much of my work is abstract or semi-representational.
